When Should You Wipe Excess Pigment During a PMU Procedure?
Wipe excess pigment as soon as the surface residue blocks the line, skin, or pigment placement you need to see. Use a clean, controlled pass, then reassess the area before continuing; if the surface is still obscured, clear it again rather than working through a layer you cannot accurately judge.
Wipe when residue changes what you can see
The useful trigger is visibility, not a fixed number of passes or a timer. Clear the surface when residue makes it difficult to see the mapped line, the edge of the work, the spacing between strokes, or where the next pigment placement should go.
A light film that leaves the working area clear does not require immediate wiping. Heavy residue does. If you find yourself guessing whether a line is still visible, stop and clear the area before placing more pigment.
Use a controlled wipe and reassess the area
Use a fresh, single-use wipe and a cleanser intended for PMU cleanup. Keep the motion controlled and limited to the residue blocking your view rather than wiping the entire area automatically after every pass.
After wiping, look again at the exact feature that was hidden:
- If the line or placement is visible, continue with the next controlled movement.
- If residue still hides the work, use a fresh section of the wipe and clear the surface again.
- If swelling or bleeding prevents a reliable view, pause until you can assess the area accurately.

If you want a dedicated option for clearing surface color during the procedure, BIOMASER All PMU Foam Cleanse is a professional cleaning mousse for PMU that removes surface color residue.
Follow the cleanser's application directions, but do not use the product format to set a universal wiping interval. The right time to wipe is when surface pigment begins to interfere with the detail you need to judge.
